Let L be a semisimple complex Lie algebra. In a famous paper (1955),
Chevalley found an integral basis of L and used this to construct new
families of simple groups, now known as Chevalley groups. Recently,
Lusztig simplified the construction of these groups using the theory of
''canonical bases''. We present a variation of this idea which leads to a
new, and quite elementary construction of L itself from its root system.
