Groups and Algebraic Geometry

A conference in honour of Wolf Barth

26th - 30th April, 2011 in Erlangen

The aim of the conference is to bring together specialists in representation theory and algebraic geometry. The main topics of the conference include:

  • Moduli spaces
  • Algebraic group actions
  • Invariant theory
  • Algebraic surfaces
  • Singularities
  • Braid and Artin groups
  • Vector bundles

The conference will mark the retirement of Professor Wolf Barth who has held the chair of algebraic geometry at Friedrich Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg for 35 years. During this time he has had numerous students. He and his work have made Erlangen a centre for algebraic geometry. Wolf Barth has made important contributions to many branches of algebraic geometry. His major achievements include works on the cohomology of projective submanifolds (Barth-Lefschetz theorems) as well as groundbreaking results on vector bundles. Wolf Barth has contributed significantly to the theory of compact complex surfaces. He also initiated the computer program SURF for visualising algebraic surfaces. Most recently, he has given us beautiful examples of algebraic surfaces with many singularities, including the Barth sextic.
